What makes ortho interviews different
Orthopaedic surgery interviews are not primarily academic evaluations. By the time a programme director invites you to interview they have already decided your academic profile is acceptable. The interview is a personality and fit assessment. Programme directors are asking one question in every interaction: do I want to work with this person for five years? That means your preparation cannot be limited to rehearsing answers to common questions. You need to understand the culture of each programme, know what they value in residents, and be able to demonstrate — not just claim — that you are the right fit for their environment.
The most common ortho interview questions
While every programme has its own style, certain questions appear consistently across ortho residency interviews. Why orthopaedic surgery — and be specific, not generic. Why this programme specifically — this question exposes whether you have done genuine research or are giving a copy-paste answer. Tell me about your research — be ready to discuss your projects fluently, including methodology, findings, and what you would do differently. What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses — the weakness answer is where many candidates lose points by being either dishonest or self-deprecating to the point of raising concerns. Where do you see yourself in ten years — programme directors want to understand your subspecialty interest and whether their programme can support it. Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation — this is a professionalism and communication assessment.
How to research each programme before your interview
Generic enthusiasm does not work in ortho interviews. Programme directors can identify a candidate who has done no research within the first two minutes of conversation. Before every interview you should know: the programme's subspecialty strengths, the names and research focus of two or three key faculty members, recent changes to the programme such as new faculty or curriculum updates, the programme's fellowship match record for recent graduates, and what current residents have said about the programme's culture in public forums or in conversations you have had during your away rotation. Your OrthoMatched mentor will run a programme-specific preparation session before each of your interviews.
The role of your away rotation in interview performance
If you rotated at a programme and performed well your interview there is already half won. The programme director and residents know you. They have seen your work ethic, your clinical skills, and your personality under pressure. The interview becomes a formality and a relationship confirmation rather than a cold evaluation. This is the single most powerful reason to choose your away rotations strategically — a strong away at a programme converts to an interview and a competitive ranking at a rate that no application strategy can replicate.
What to do after each interview
Send a thank you email within 24 hours to the programme coordinator and the programme director. Keep it brief, specific, and genuine. Reference something specific from the day — a conversation with a resident, a point the PD made during their presentation, a moment that reinforced your interest in the programme. Do not send a generic thank you — programme directors receive hundreds. A specific, well-written thank you note is remembered. If a programme is your top choice, a well-crafted letter of intent sent after interviews close signals your genuine preference and can influence your ranking position.
